We would like to introduce you to the McCaughey Septuplets: Alexis, Brandon, Joel, Kelsey, Kenny, Jr., Natalie, and Nathan. Bobbi and Kenny McCaughey brought them all into the world on 19 November 1997. Such an introduction may not be necessary at all! After all, two decades ago, their birth caused quite a stir across the globe since they were the first surviving septuplets in the world. And yet their story has more to offer. They intrigued the mass media, which reported their achievements as they matured into the finest adults they are now. Anyway, how’s the family doing nowadays?
Where Are They?
Are you curious to know how the McCaughey couple and the septuplets are doing right now? Those who might have known their story would have wondered what had happened to them two decades ago, after taking over the world’s headlines. For most of us, it was indeed a historic moment! It’s reassuring to know that, despite their differences in personalities, likes, and hobbies, they’ve grown into such beautiful people and think of each other as best friends.
What’s The Update?
Wanna learn more about the well-known McCaughey Septuplets? You’re not the only one! We’ve collected information and would like to share with you all these updates on the life of the beautiful McCaughey family. And as curiosity crawls through your head, we bet you have many questions right now. How old are they? Where are they living? Have they all grown healthy? How do they look? During pregnancy and birth, were there no complications? All these are just a few of the questions we might get the answer to!
Welcoming Seven Children All At Once
On November 19, 1997, Bobbi McCaughey gave birth to seven gorgeous babies in Des Moines, Iowa. The septuplets were a combination of 4 boys and three girls. They were born nine weeks earlier than Bobbi’s expected delivery date. She went through a cesarean section, and in just six minutes, all her little ones were out of her belly! It’s a huge relief for Bobbi noticing that her babies were safe and healthy, although she knew the risk of pregnancy and birth, is a huge relief. Imagine what she’s eaten all nine months?
Welcome To The World
It must be an exciting and challenging experience for Iowa Methodist Medical Center’s Dr Paula Mahone to handle the world’s first septuplets case. It’s still successful, despite the risks and consequences of pregnancy and birth! Each septuplet weighed between 2.5 to 3.4 pounds, but not all children were born well. Two of McCaughey’s septuplets have developmental issues affecting their motor skills. The other children only had a low health problem as they grew up, but nothing as serious as the other two.
Some Of Them Had Health Problems
It is a miracle, indeed, that all seven children were born safely, even though they and their mother and they were at risk. But not everyone was born healthy. Alexis McCaughey was born with Hypotonic Quadriplegia, a disorder that causes the weakening of all four limbs. He was born with only about 2 pounds of weight and is second in the baby’s order. Given the low muscle tones of her arms, legs, and torso, Alexis couldn’t or have trouble holding positions.
More Health Issues
McCaughey Septuplets became known worldwide as the first surviving Septuplets. Since the pregnancy with the seven children came out, people’s eyes were on them until they were welcomed into the world. People were updated on the situation and the state of their wellbeing. Nathan weighed 3 pounds and the fourth in the children’s order, and he also had health problems, like Alexis. Nathan was diagnosed with Spastic Diplegia. This condition causes his legs muscles to tighten uncontrollably.
Four Out Of Seven
Back then, everyone might have been interested in how McCaughey’s septuplets, and the married couple, cope with those circumstances. It’s amazing to be able to give birth to all those seven kids, but it’s another obstacle that the couple had to overcome. Natalie, weighing about 2 pounds and 3rd in baby order, and Alexis, weighing around 2 pounds and 2nd in baby order, had severe reflux and had to be fed through a pump.
What The Public Had To Say
If you’re one of the people who saw McCaughey Septuplets news when it came out, what would be your reaction? Do you support the family or worry about their situation? A mixture of good and bad reviews was then responded to by the public. Many people wished them all the best and hoped to keep all seven kids. Others, though, were unhappy with the situation and even scolded by letters sent.
Well-Known Around Town
McCaughey has received various kinds of treatment since gaining massive publicity. Everyone’s reaction might have overwhelmed them, but they had to cope with it, given the shocking news they dispatched worldwide. Bobbi notified the 2007 Baptist Bulletin of the people who came to their septuplets’ home.”We had strangers come around to the back door, knock, and ask if they could hold a baby,” Bobbi said. Who, if you had a choice, wouldn’t want it? Even the U.S. President felt the same way!
A Call From The President
In your daily life, receiving a phone call from the U.S. President may be the last thing in your mind. Nevertheless, this was not the case with the McCaughey family. Around the year McCaughey Septuplets was born, President Bill Clinton was appointed to the Oval Office for another term of office. He was amazed by McCaughey’s remarkable story that he called them out to give them his warm blessings personally. “Everybody up here at the White House has been sitting here wide-mouthed.”
Not only did the president recognize McCaughey ‘s family, but he also called! “All of us who raised one or two kids, and three, are just amazed. But I admire you, and I think it’s great, and I hope it will be a great adventure for you the whole way through”, Bill Clinton told Bobbi. For all moms out there, childbirth was indeed a scary experience. Imagine if you gave birth to seven, you’d be one of the world’s bravest mothers.
Visit To The White House
Imagine you ever could step inside the White House and meet the President of America, congratulating you on something you’ve done? It might have been the case for the McCaughey family, as they were invited to come to the White House for a short visit by the President himself. What a privilege, no? Well, who wouldn’t meet the beautiful family after taking over the news from around the world?
Scholarships From The Get-Go
Raising seven children at once is not much easier, especially financially. The selective reduction was Bobbi McCaughey ‘s choice to reduce her risk of pregnancy and childbirth complications. It may have also been a chance for them to support their kids with their means to give them a decent life. But Bobbi declined and kept all seven children. She said they would “put it in God’s hands.” After childbirth, they provided tremendous support from both the private and public sectors.
Gifts From Birth
The married couple, Bobbi and Kenny McCaughey must have been blessed if they’d been pregnant with seven children. While they don’t know where it takes them, they pushed and decided they’d have seven kids. Several people were there to support them with everything they needed. The state of Iowa offered full scholarships for all seven kids at all universities in the said state. Hannibal-LaGrange University also offered them full scholarships. People’s kindness continued to fill the McCaughey family with much help in essential supplies.
The Generosity Of Strangers
Numerous citizens were ready to help McCaughey ‘s family. Particularly the people that are literally very close to them. Some of them arranged fundraising to help their families meet their financial needs. Recognizing the family internationally and receiving donations from people nationally was a great help. A private company, Proctor & Gamble Co., also offered them a lifetime supply of Pampers diapers. They needed it, and it helped them to save more money!
The Generosity Of Strangers
The Donations Piled In
After blessings, the McCaughey family received another blessing as many people and companies decided to donate. Some corporate officials even offered bank donations, a van, and groceries. Wow! As the Los Angeles Times said, Gerber Products Co. provided a furnace by a heating company and baby food every year. Several things come on the family’s way! Even before the septuplets were born, many may not have known that the McCaughey couple had another child for years.
Do Not Forget The Eldest Child
With the attention on the septuplets, most who knew them by news and articles probably did not know that they had the eldest child. It wasn’t granted as much attention as the seven kids stunned the nation. The eldest among the siblings was Mikayla Marie who was born twenty-one months ahead, January 3, 1996. She always lent her mother a helping hand after the birth of her seven siblings.
The eldest sister, Mikayla Marie, attended the seven-sibling feeding session to help her mother, Bobbi McCaughey. For her, she now had seven siblings who’d soon be her best friends, so it might have been an exciting turn of life. She didn’t even have to leave the house to play with friends, as she already has 7 siblings! Mikayla is happily married to a pastor now in Kansas City. She gave birth in 2017 to a baby boy named Beckham.
The McCaughey Septuplets’ Sweet Dreams
Despite two years of McCaughey’s couple surprising the nation, their septuplets are still unforgotten! To celebrate their second-year birthday, Wes Yoder, their media and spiritual advisor, and the president of the Nashville Ambassador Artist Agency, produced a lullaby album for the McCaughey Septuplets. The album was named “The McCaughey Septuplets Sweet Dreams”. A variety of artists from across London to Nashville have spent their time creating the collection for the seven children.
Artists Who Wanted To Help
Many Christian artists from various places helped contribute to the album. They were Kathie Lee Gifford, Cindy Morgan, Steeve Green, Michael Smith, Ginny Owens, Geoff Moore, Chris Rice, Sandi Patty, and Kim Hill.To provide for their family, the McCaughey couple had to turn into music. Furthermore, they performed in church, and half the profit will be given to the foundation they started helping out. They also used various methods to raise funds, shed insight and awareness of their situation.
A Book Deal As Well
Their courage was incredible. Though, their decision almost two decades ago was courageous and terrifying, as they didn’t know what would happen nor the consequences that waited for them once they had been in that situation. Nonetheless, as Bobbi said, all sounded good to the whole family with all their faith and trust in God. Following the album’s release, Wes Yoder was also able to produce a book deal for the McCaughey family! It covers their story and showcases the family’s faith and courage.
“This story of simple faith recounts the events leading up to, during, and following the births of the only living septuplets in the world,” the Amazon description of Book Seven from Heaven says. This tells not only how the seven babies were born or the struggles the McCaughey family experienced, but also how all the people who admired them supported the couple and, foremost, their strong faith. Nevertheless, the McCaughey took a life-changing decision after they became adults.
They Ended Up Selling The House
We don’t even notice people growing up around us as time goes by so fast. As Bobbi and Kenny’s seven kids grew up and left home, becoming empty-nesters, they sold their 5,500 sq. Ft. Home. It has seven bedrooms and five bathrooms. It’s a gift the married couple received back from Clark Company in 1998. Ruth Harbor, a Des Moines-based non-profit organization, inherited the house. The organization helps young mothers with housing and welfare.
Since the septuplets left home and finally managed their lives, Bobbi and Kenny sold their house to the organization that provides housing and support for young mothers. The McCaughey couple is now living in a three-bedroom house. “We have been blessed to receive such a wonderful gift, and nothing would please us more than the idea of our home being used as a place of refuge to others in need.”, Bobbi said. Do you know where they’ll be after they’ve left home and how they’re doing now?
Kenny “Class Clown” McCaughey, Jr.
As the eldest in the septuplets, he might have seemed like the pack leader. Yet his siblings called Kenny McCaughey the “Class Clown.” It must’ve been fun to play with so many kids every day. It’s like living in a house with your dearest friends. To take up Construction Trade, Kenny pursued vocational studies at Des Moines Area Community College. While he was studying there he stayed in the family house.
A Big Family
After being guests on TODAY in 1997, they appeared on the show again. Just days before their 18th birthday the McCaughey family was invited again to be the show’s guests. They were interviewed and asked how they handled their lives so far. Kenny said, “Just having a big family with a lot of brothers and sisters to hang out with. You’re never alone, and there’s always someone to talk to”. He also added, “That’s what I think is best.”
Kelsey “The Singer” McCaughey
When Kelsey was born she was only about 2.4 pounds. Among the other six children, she was the lightest and was born fourth in order. Like her parents, Kelsey was into music. It was her dream. But not everything works in your favor. She postpones her lifelong dream and planned to pursue music at Hannibal LaGrange University. She said in TODAY ‘s interview, “It was a culture shock, for sure,” when asked about her decision to attend university, which was far from their home.
“It was a difficult transition to be away from our parents and be outside of Iowa, but I think that we all did welcome it, and just really created new friendships and met new people in a new environment,” Kelsey McCaughey in her interview on TODAY. It might be a big adjustment for everyone, not just Kelsey, but also her siblings. Leaving home after spending your entire life with your family, 24/7, isn’t something you can easily leave behind.
Natalie “Smarty Pants” McCaughey
It’s no secret that when they were young the McCaughey septuplets did not all have healthy lives. Natalie is one of them. When they were young, she and her sister Alexis had to be fed by a pump and had a severe reflux. But this has not hindered either of them from living life. Natalie is now known to be the “Smarty Pants” in the septuplets. The reason her other siblings called her smarty-pants was her desire to excel in her studies.
A Married Lady
The “Smarty Pants” among the other siblings, Natalie McCaughey, attended Hannibal LaGrange University as did Kelsey. While she wasn’t always talking about her GPA, or even through we couldn’t get updates about her studies because she was the smart one in the bunch, we know she won’t have any trouble finding the right man to love. In May 2019, Natalie got married to Shawn Geralds, her college sweetheart.
Nathan Is A Computer Geek
Nathan McCaughey, born around 3 pounds in weight and fourth in baby order, was just like Alexis and Natalie. He also had a tough childhood as he suffered from Spastic Diplegia. However, it didn’t stop him from creating and making his dreams come true. Ever since he was a child, Nathan’s been into computers. Therefore, when he pursued a career in that field, it’s really no surprise to his parents and siblings.
All About Computers
At a young age, Nathan began showing his fondness for computers. Over the years, he became more interested in computers. He later joined Joey, Kelsey, and Natalie is studying Computer Information Systems at Hannibal Lagrange University. He plans to even pursue a career professionally at the age of 22. It must have been nice to know what to do when you’re young. He just focused on one thing he really wanted, and now he’s slowly making his way to his aspirations.
Joel “The Bookworm” McCaughey
Joel McCaughey, who was named by his siblings ‘The Bookworm,’ because of his love of reading, was born and weighed about two pounds and Bobbi was the last one to be removed from his mother’s womb. Joel has a computer love, as Nathan did. Books have only been an additional hobby for him, apart from exploring computer activities. Like his three other siblings, he took up computer information systems at Hannibal LaGrange University. It’s good that he has someone to share his passion with, and that’s Nathan Computer Geek, of course.
Alexis Made It To The Cheerleading Squad
Alexis McCaughey was one of McCaughey ‘s children who were young and suffered from disorders. She had a quadriplegia hypotonic. However, it might have seemed during his high school days that she didn’t have it at all! After several operations to strengthen her leg muscles, she finally proved that she was already well. It was an enormous achievement for her when she became part of her high school cheering team. It was a dream come true for her.
Alexis McCaughey just did not prove she was able to do anything she wanted by taking Hypotonic Quadriplegia and also by pursuing early education in the University of Hannibal LaGrange where her other four siblings also took their favorite courses. It’s wonderful for Alexis to follow such a career path because it’s one of the most admirable. In fact, it demands the love for young children, which we are quite sure it has!
Brandon Joined The Army
Choosing a career path is not as simple as it sounds. That’s where your life will take you and revolve. It may nevertheless be the case for everyone. However, one of the seven McCaughey pursued another type of career, very different from other people. Brandon decided to join and serve in the Military.
Weddings are super amazing! From guests, gifts, and programs prepared for the newly born are something to be enjoyed about from the dances. He must have had a nice look at items in the wedding registry of Brandon and Alana, cookware, dinnerware, store, and gadgets. If you look at the items on the list, you could suggest that the couple wanted to stay for dinner very often! The entire family must then be released!
What Bobbi Had To Say About The Kids
Being a mother of eight children in total and raising seven children all of them simultaneously is one of Bobbi’s superpowers. For her and her boyfriend, Kenny, it was indeed a great challenge. Things may not always go their way, but fortunately, they are supported by their family and friends until the sevenfold is born. They received tremendous love from various people and companies. Her strong faith has been tested several times, but it was the only thing he dearly held when she and her family were insane. “That has been the rock that we have had to stand on,” she mentioned in an interview on TODAY.
It should have been difficult for both Kenny and Bobbi when all their children went on and stayed at home. It was a big change, from the fact that so many children were in the house to the two. They may be empty nests now, as they call it, but they are still caring for their grandson, Beckham. They focus their attention just now on the little child and their relationship.
Leaving our children in the house is perhaps one of the saddest parents. Naturally, you can not prevent them from exploring the world by themselves, because they will also build their own family sooner or later. It must be sad, but it fulfills the knowledge that as a parent you have done your part. The McCaughey couple certainly have the same feeling. As Bobbi said, “It’s been very different in some respects it’s been fun because Kenny and I have managed to do a lot more things, just the two of us, but I kind of miss the business of having everyone at home. When they are home, it’s really enjoyable and something we look forward to a lot.”
Now A Grandmother
Bobbi McCaughey, being Beckham’s grandmother, was asked how she feels like she is today in an interview, about her septuplet’s 21st birthday.. “The love for them is the same, but the responsibility is so different,” she answered. When all her children left home, Beckham, her grandson, could spend time with her. Of course, raising Beckham is not her responsibility, but she looks after him sometimes together with her husband as a loving grandmother she is. “It’s just been fun to be able to visit and see the milestones and get to do all the fun things with (Beckham), but I don’t have to raise him.”, she added.
What Kenny Is Doing Now
We’ve always talked about Bobbi and the septuplet. Now let’s talk about the seven children’s father, Kevin McCaughey. He once was a Chevrolet employee with a position as a billing employee in the finance department. He decided to leave his job and follow another path than dealing with a lot of numbers. Following his resignation, Kevin decided to pursue a career in public. In a church, where he and Bobbi were married, he gave a press conference about the “Miracle of the Birth.” He also talked to pro-life groups from different places in the country.
During his interview today and on the septuplet’s 18th birthday he explained how it felt and how his children were born. “It was watching them come out of the womb for me,” he said. He is now holding a post in a church, a deacon, whose task is to visit and manage a fund for various elder members of the church.
Helping Families With Multiples
It is moving that Kenny and Bobbi McCaughey also help other families who have been blessed with several children. They had to know how to bring up several children all at once because they lived to tell the story and were part of history. There are no other people in the world who know better how many children simultaneously than the McCaughey couple. They were blessed with so many things from the outset and should have shared these blessings with other families who had the same situation two decades ago.
Learning From The Professionals
As we know, Kenny and Bobbi, the McCaughey couple, have helped different families in several areas. On the basis of her own experience, Bobbi and Kenny knew how difficult it was to bring up multiple children simultaneously; the battles and difficulties with only the two children taking care of their seven children. The couple then extended their arms to Jeanette ‘s family and Mobile, Alabama’s Mark Zimlich. They had five times! Kenny and Bobbi offered their assistance and shared the young couple their words of wisdom.
Ensuring They Were Set
The McCaughey not only offered their help and shared their wise words, but managed also to get donations for the young couples five times! Bring us back to when the McCaughey couple has indeed received so many seven-fold donations. They were able to supply them with baby food, toys, clothes, and other essential products. It is very warm to know that when the seven-fold was still young the couple could give back the blessings they received. They also became a blessing for other people because of the love and blessing they received from others.
The septuplet turned 21 in November 2018! They’re finally of legal age. You can do anything you want, whether you drink it or just travel the world. This is an enormous achievement, particularly for the McCaughey couple. Their sevenfold have grown into so beautiful adults and are ready to toast Champagne! The seven kids have celebrated their birthdays in different places because, after they left their homes, they are far from each other. But, they also had a big, complete, and happy celebration in their family home!
In fact, it was a global phenomenon when the McCaughey septuplet was born in 1997. They also received enormous attention from the public. That’s what the sevenfold thought when they grew old and realized that they’re not just ordinary children like everyone else, but incredibly, of course. They thought it was a huge achievement, but now that they are grown-ups, it is much more surprising to see how they grew up as a person and followed different paths on their own. They became courageous and independent as they tried to manage their own lives.
Own Interests & Hobbies
Even if they share their womb and grow up together, McCaughey’s septuplets have different personalities that have developed themselves and even love. At such a young age, they have succeeded in having an interest in things. Born with so many siblings can be fun and satisfying and make you think you no longer need friends, as you have them every day in your home and 24 hours a day! Well, that’s not the case for McCaughey’s sevenfold. Even if their siblings are always around, they have managed to spend time with their friends.
